Professional user experience design leader
DesignOps
The practice of DesignOps, or design operations, focuses on processes and measures that support the creation of high-quality designs across organizations. In my most recent role, I managed the formal Design & User Experience (D&UX) assessment program for IBM Software.
Accomplishements
- Organized D&UX review meetings with product teams, design executives, and specialized reviewers for each major release.
- Recruited and trained 300+ reviewers to evaluate products on D&UX focus areas (Accessibility, Content, Usability, Visual design, and Watson AI) and universal experiences (Discover, Learn, Try, Buy, Get started, and Use) using established IBM experience quality standards.
- Revamped the D&UX assessment process by creating web forms for each reviewer role, automating the calculation of scores, facilitating the publication of assessment reports on the IBM intranet, and creating dashboards to track scores over time.
- Promoted the use of D&UX assessment scores as a quality success metric across IBM Software by writing intranet blog posts and presenting to product teams.
- Ensured all issues identified during D&UX assessments were tracked and prioritized in GitHub or Jira, resulting in a 10% improvement in product experience quality year-over-year.
Platform Design
Designing for an enterprise platform is more complex than designing for a standalone product! In a previous role, I led a 20-person team designing the core features of IBM Cloud Pak for Data, a new platform modernizing how enterprises collect, organize, and analyze data and infuse Watson AI throughout their business.
Accomplishments
- Established regular design team critiques and "four-in-a-box" meetings with the product marketing, development, design, and content teams to facilitate knowledge sharing and develop a shared vision for the platform.
- Collaborated with the teams who designed the previously standalone products contribututing concepts to the Cloud Pak for Data platform, including IBM Watson Studio and IBM Knowledge Catalog, to ensure a consistent and unified platform experience.
- Also collaborated with teams defining the services shared across multiple IBM Cloud Paks and their corresponding Carbon design patterns including the homepage framework, global search, onboarding, notifications, and user management.
Design Systems
When designing for enterprise platforms, consistency and reusability are of paramount importance! I have over 20 years experience developing design systems and style guides for complex enterprise platforms.
Accomplishements
- Recognized as a contributor to the IBM Carbon open source design system for my work on Cloud Pak design patterns including notifications and user management.
- Designed and documented patterns for the Archipelago design system for the Informatica Intelligent Cloud Services platform including asset management, data visualizations, forms and tables, messages and validation, navigation, and responsive page layouts.
- Collaborated with UI developers to implement Archipelago design patterns as reusable React components called Droplets.
- Designed and documented patterns for SAP Business ByDesign web applications including enterprise search, find forms, input and value help, learning and help centers, and message handling.
- Created a style guide for all of Intuit's Quicken applications, including classic Quicken personal finance software and newer products including Quicken Rental Property Manager and Quicken Health Expense Tracker.
- Created a style guide for Siebel Interactive Selling Suite of web applications based on an evaluation of common B2B and B2C eCommerce website design patterns of the time.
